Netflix now lets you customize subtitles on your TV
Netflix is now allowing TV viewers to choose the size and format of closed captions and subtitles. With this update, subscribers have a choice of four styles/colors, including the standard white text option, drop shadow (white text with black background), light (black text with white backdrop), and contrast. They can also select from three sizes: small, medium, and big (yellow text with black background). By the end of today, the update will be made available to TV users worldwide.
Before recently, the only way for Netflix subscribers to access these options for closed caption and subtitle size and style was online. The fact that streaming on big screens, such as connected Televisions, smart TVs, and gaming consoles, accounted for 77% of all streaming minutes globally in the first quarter of 2022 makes it a good news for TV viewers. Notably, a 2019 survey by Verizon Media and Publicis Media found that 80% of People said they are more inclined to complete a video if it had available subtitles.

Although it might seem like a little change, providing TV viewers additional options for closed captions and subtitles in terms of styles, fonts, sizes, and colors can greatly enhance the viewing experience. For instance, for visually impaired, deaf, and hard-of-hearing viewers, choosing the appropriate size and style of subtitles can make a significant impact. Keep in mind that a limited selection of Netflix movies already include subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH). Furthermore useful for viewers who might not comprehend the language are closed captions and subtitles.
Several streaming services, including Amazon Video, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, Peacock, and Discovery+, among others, let users alter the size and style of the subtitles.
Today’s Netflix upgrade comes almost a year after the streaming service expanded to more than 11,000 hours of descriptive audio in over 30 languages and introduced badges for audio and subtitle explanations.
